Evangelical United Methodist Church was first
recognized as a congregation on March 15, 1851 by the United Brethren in Christ
Church. Plans were made in August 1851 to erect a 30' x 40' building at the
cost of $725.00. The church, known as the "Little Brown Church",
boasted a membership of six people.
In 1892 the building was demolished and the construction was started on the
present day two story building. From that time until February, 1893, when the
present building was dedicated, the church experienced many changes including
the expansion to a larger brick building. This building was used as a private
school known as the Middletown Academy. It was later sold and used by the
Reformed Mennonite Congregation.
The Education Building that houses the kitchen facilities, choir room,
office, classrooms and fellowship hall with stage, was dedicated on November 8,
1953. The latest architectural addition to E.U.M. has been our elevator with
handicap entrance, constructed in 1996.
In 2004 we started a $250,000.00 Renovation project. To date we have
completed the Sanctuary upgrade which included a Multimedia Sound and Video
system, enlarged the Nursery, and added a handicap accessible restroom. We are
currently reconstructing our kitchen facilities.
