Because we follow Jesus who served "the last,
the least and the lost", we serve Jesus by serving others in our community
and around the world.
Since the United Methodist church is a connectional system, we join other
congregations throughout the world to support many mission projects here at
home, throughout Central Pennsylvania, nationally and around the world through
our "first-mile giving" regular offerings.
While monetary support of mission is extremely important, we also believe
that as Jesus "got his hands dirty" serving others, so do we.
Hands-on mission is a special emphasis at EUMC, expected of all able-body
professed members. Here are some ministries in which we "get our hands
dirty."
Red Bird Mission -
We send work teams from EUMC every odd-numbered year as part of the
Volunteers
in Mission ministry of the United Methodist Church. The mission begun in
1921 in one of the most poverty-stricken areas of the United States:
southeastern Kentucky. EUMC has had a long historical relationship with the
mission as one of our members, the late Almeda Brandt, served on the financial
staff at Red Bird for a number of years. Evangelical also provides partial
salary assistance to Angela Hubbard (Advance no. 773724 designate for support of Angela Hubbard), a visiting
nurse with the Red Bird Mountain Medical Center, as one-half of our offering to
the Advance for
Christ and His Church "second-mile giving" mission ministry of
the United Methodist Church.
Sierra Leone Wells and Sanitation Project - A ministry first
limited to well-drilling and later expanded to include latrine builidng and
cleaning in the African nation of Sierra Leone (Advance no. 181000). Part of
the United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR) diasaster ministries, the Sierra Leone project receives the
other half of our second-mile giving through the Advance.
Middletown Area Meals-on-Wheels - We help deliver food for
persons who are physically unable to leave their residence to go grocery
shopping
Middletown Area Food Pantry - We gather food every second
and fourth Sundays of each month and deliver them to the area food pantry. We
also assist in staffing the pantry and distribute food each Tuesday.
Middletown Care-a-Van - One of our EUMC members oversees a
special van we drive for persons in the greater Middletown area who need
transportation to medical and dental appointments
Middletown Thrift Shop - We help staff the town thrift
store for lower income persons.
Ronald McDonald House
- We help supply food, cook meals and collect aluminum can tabs for the Hershey
branch. Families with children as patients in the
Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital
reside there while visiting their child in the medical center.
God's Clothes Closet - Just begun this past August, we
collected good quality clothing from the community and gave it away to nearly
400 needy persons.
Neighborhood Center of the UMC, Inc - We help provide meals
on occasion for the center in inner city Harrisburg children.
Bethesda Mission
- Our young people help staff the soup kitchen at this men's homeless shelter
in inner city Harrisburg.
Mission Central
- We travel across the Susquehanna River into Mechanicsburg the third Tuesday
morning of each month to pack items stored at the Mission Central ministry of
the Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church. Projects
included preparing flood buckets for hurricane-ravaged areas, toiletry kits for
overseas delievery, and similar projects
